Running Facebook Ads for leads is much more useful when you can actually tell which ads are generating conversions.
That's where the Meta Pixel comes in.
By setting up a Lead event on your website, you can send conversion data back to Meta and see how your Facebook Ads are performing.
Here's the basic setup.
Step 1: Make Sure Your Meta Pixel Is Installed
Before tracking individual events, your Meta Pixel needs to be connected to your website.
Go to:
Meta Events Manager → Connect Data → Web
From there, Meta provides several ways to connect your website, including partner integrations and manual installation.
If your Pixel is already installed and receiving website activity, you can move on to setting up the Lead event.
Step 2: Open the Event Setup Tool
Inside Events Manager, select your website data source and access the event setup options.
Meta supports a point-and-click Event Setup Tool, which lets you configure certain website events without manually adding event code.
Enter your website URL and open your website through the setup tool.
Step 3: Choose What Counts as a Lead
Now decide what action actually represents a lead.
For example, someone might:
Submit an enquiry form
Register for something
Request a quotation
Complete a contact form
Ideally, you want to track the action that confirms the person successfully became a lead—not simply someone who visited the page.
Step 4: Set Up the Lead Event
Using the Event Setup Tool, identify the appropriate action or URL and assign the relevant event.
For a completed lead action, this will typically be:
Lead
For example, if someone completes your contact form and is redirected to:
/thank-you/
you can use that successful completion as the point where your Lead conversion is recorded.
This gives you a simple journey:

Step 5: Test Your Tracking
Don't immediately start spending money without checking that your tracking works.
Complete the lead process yourself.
Then check Events Manager to confirm that Meta is receiving the expected event.
If the Lead event fires correctly, you'll have much better visibility into what happens after someone clicks your advertisement.

Why Lead Tracking Matters
Without conversion tracking, you might see:
Ad A → 100 clicks
Ad B → 70 clicks
and assume Ad A is better.
But what if:
Ad A → 2 leads
Ad B → 10 leads
Suddenly the story changes.
That's why you shouldn't optimize Facebook Ads around clicks alone.
You ultimately want to know:
How much did I spend?
↓
How many leads did I generate?
↓
How much did each lead cost?
That's the information that helps you make better advertising decisions.
